歧視出於懶惰
(瑪13:54-58)

「歧視」也是把問題簡單化的結果。
所謂「初生之犢不懼虎」。孩提時代,我們充滿冒險精神,四出探索新奇的事物。年紀大了,失去了童真,對新事物不感興趣;而且安於逸樂,不願認識新事物,覺得費時失事,不會為自己帶來好處。索性把事物簡單化,好能不費吹灰之力,應付到日常生活上的需要便算數了。

對於陌生的人,伸出友善的手去認識了解他們是麻煩的,要佔用很多時間的,而且可能會帶來損失的。所以最懶惰,最安全的方法就是把他們歸類到似曾相識的群組之中,於是便產生了各種各樣的歧視。

對於熟識的人,就更加沒有必要重新再認識他們了,諒他們也不會有任何新的突破。能做到「士別三日、挖目相看」的機會率是微乎其微的。所以,納匝肋的居民就是這樣看待了耶穌。結果,耶穌未能為自己的同鄉行神蹟,未能治療他們的病苦。這個故事提醒我們,歧視別人,或者把問題簡單化,最終的受害者是自己。

天父啊,請敦促鞭策我們,不要做個懶惰的人。亞孟。

SLOTH LEADS TO DISCRIMINATION
Matthew 13:54-58

Discrimination is also an outcome of oversimplification.
As an idiom goes, "a newly born calf has no fear of tigers." We were adventurous in our childhood, exploring exciting things around. As we grew older, we lost our naivety and interests in new things. We stay in our comfort zone, reluctant to know new things, thinking it a waste of time and bringing us no benefit. We even oversimplify things so that we can lead a normal life with the least effort.

As for a total stranger, it takes a lot of time and is rather troublesome for us to extend a friendly hand to him in order to know and understand him. Perhaps he might bring us damages. The laziest and easiest way is to categorize him into groups which we are familiar with. In so doing, we create all kinds of discrimination. As for familiar people, there is no need to know them again. We don't expect them to transform overnight. The chances of doing so are extremely slim. So was the way people of Nazareth treated Jesus. Consequently, Jesus failed to perform miracles among his countrymen, was unable to heal their sicknesses. This story is a good reminder that in the end, we ourselves become victims of discrimination or oversimplification.

Heavenly Father, prod us not to be lazy. Amen.

舊的和新的 OLD AND NEW

舊的和新的
(瑪13:47-53)

新與舊真是完全的二分,完全的對立嗎?
很多人為了政治目的,發動不少「破舊立新」的運動。把對手塑造成阻礙進步的「舊勢力」,自己是先進的「新思維」,是社會的未來。結果是把對手拉倒了,卻賠上了沉重的代價,連自己的根,自己的源頭都乾涸了。

其實,耶穌已清楚表示過祂來不是廢除法律和先知(即所謂的「舊約」)而是來成全它(瑪5:17)耶穌來是把「舊約」提升為「新約」,而不是來推翻「舊約」。就如今天的福音所說,「從他的寶庫裡,提出新的和舊的東西。」(13:52

可惜,人類沒有聽從耶穌基督的教訓,甚至在教會的歷史中,同樣有人試圖以各種理由去否定「舊約」:例如說耶穌基督以祂的死而復活已建立「新約」,取代了「舊約」,所以基督徒不必研讀「舊約」了;或者說「舊約」中的所謂天主實在太殘忍,太暴力了,有違耶穌寬恕人,愛人的教訓;所以基督徒應刪除聖經中的「舊約」或「舊約」的部份經典等……

飲水要思源,做人不可忘本。「破舊立新」所得到的「新」祗會是一個沒有過去,沒有根基的「新」。這個「新」又怎樣可以持久呢?當我們藉著洗禮,清除原罪本罪而成為一個「新人」的時候,為甚麼我們仍然犯罪,需要辦「修如聖事」呢?因為洗禮後那「舊我」仍然存在。我們要運一生的歲月,把這「舊我」逐漸提升成為「新我」。但這個「舊我」是有可貴的成份的,是值得保存在寶庫之中,不一定要完全推倒的。

天父,請讓我們辨別到舊事物中的珍貴部份,給它們應得的對待。亞孟。

OLD AND NEW
(Matthew 13:47-53)

Are new and old two opposite poles of a dichotomy?
Many people ignite political movements to abolish the old and establish the new. They demonize their rivals as old reactionary forces that hinder progress and they themselves are progressive new mentality, the future of the society. Consequently, they succeed in defeating their rivals at a high cost. They uproot themselves and dry out their sources.

Actually, Jesus has already made it clear that he did not come to abolish Torah and Prophets (the so called "Old Testament"). He came to fulfil them (Matthew 5:17). Jesus came to upgrade the Old Testament into the New Testament, not to overthrow the Old Testament. To quote today's text, "brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old." (Matthew 13:52)

It is a pity that men reject Jesus' teaching. In Church history, there were people who attempted with various reasons to deny the Old Testament: for example, Jesus has already set up the New Testament with his passion and resurrection to replace the Old Testament. Therefore, it is not necessary for Christians to study the Old Testament. Or the so called God in the Old Testament was too brutal and blood thirsty. He did not fit into Jesus' teachings of forgiveness and love. Therefore, Christians should mutilate part or all of the Old Testament from the Bible etc...

When we drink, we should think about where our water comes from. When we are successful in the society, let us not forget where we came from. The "New" we achieve by abolishing the "Old" is a "New" without a past, without a foundation. How can this "New" last? In receiving baptism which washes away our Original Sin and our Actual Sins, we become a new creature. Why then do we continue to commit sins and need to go to Confession? It is because our "Old Self" still exists after baptism. We need to spend our whole life to sublime this "Old Self" gradually into a "New Self". But there must be something precious in this "Old Self", worth keeping in our treasure. It is not necessary to throw all of it away.

Heavenly Father, let us discern precious things in old stuff and give them an appropriate treatment. Amen.

祈禱與勞動 ORA ET LABORA

祈禱與勞動
(若11:19-27,路10:38-42)

我們最常犯的謬誤,就是把問題簡單化,而最方便的簡單法莫過於「非此即彼」的二分法了。例如在人際關係上,不是我的朋友就是我的敵人;在工作關係上,祗有上司下屬而沒有團隊;在人神關係上,祗有創造者與受造物,而沒有既是天主又是人的天人中保等等。今天且讓我們默想聖瑪爾大的生平,以豐富我們的生命。

我們時常把瑪爾大和她的妹妹瑪利亞放在對立面之上:瑪爾大是勤勞外向的傳教型,瑪利亞則是內歛的默觀型。不過最重要的,就是耶穌欣賞瑪利亞的默觀,多於瑪爾大的辛勞!可是,我們又犯了把事物二分化的毛病了。

其實,默觀就不用恆心和毅力嗎?您不知道祈禱可以到達心力交瘁的水平嗎?
另一方面,勞動就沒有祈禱的成分嗎?體力的勞動就不可以是祈禱嗎?一定要放下手中的鋤頭,跪地合十纔算是祈禱嗎?不能放羊的同時創作聖詠嗎?聖奧思定曾說過詠唱聖詩是雙倍的祈禱。唱歌不用學習、練習和消耗體力嗎?可見,勞動與默觀並不完全對立,把二者揉合是我們的理想和目標。雖然我們沒有天使的大能,但我們值得他們妒忌的地方,就在於我們是血肉和靈聖的結合體,我們可以運用我們的靈性生命昇華我們的血肉生命。瑪爾大向耶穌投訴並不是一個錯誤,我們要感謝她向我們揭示出勞動和祈禱的真諦───對主耶穌的渴求。天主欣賞我們以不同的方式向祂表達出我們的愛:耶穌喜歡我們為祂預備美酒佳餚,同時也不希望我們阻止他人坐在祂腳前默觀天主的聖容。

天父啊,讓我們自由自在地勤奮祈禱吧。亞孟。

ORA ET LABORA
(John 11:19-27; Luke 10:38-42)

The most common fallacy we commit is to oversimplify the problem and the simplest way to oversimplify is to dichotomize. For example, in interpersonal relationships, if you are not my friends then you are my enemies. In working relationships, there is only an organization chart. There is no team. In the relation between God and men, there are only Creator and creatures. There is not a God-man mediator etc. So let us meditate the life of St. Martha to enrich our life.

We tend to put Martha and her sister Maria on opposite poles: Martha belongs to the hardworking and outgoing missionary type, Maria the ascetic contemplative type. But the most important of all, Jesus praises the contemplation of Maria more than the diligence of Martha! But, we commit the dichotomy fallacy again.

Indeed, does not contemplation require perseverance? Don't you know that we can exhaust ourselves with prayers? On the other hand, are there no prayer elements in work? Is corporal work not prayer? Is it necessary to put down our plough, kneel down and fold our hands together in order to be qualified as prayers? Was it forbidden to write psalms while shepherding? St. Augustine once said that singing hymns is double portion of prayer. Doesn't singing demand training, practising and dissipating energy? Therefore, work and prayer are not diametrically opposite. Our target and ideal is to blend the two together. Although we are not as powerful as angels, there is one aspect of which angels should be jealous. We are a hybrid of spirit and matter. We are able to sublime our physical life with our spiritual life. It is not wrong for Martha to complain to Jesus. We should thank her for showing us the truth of prayer and work --- the desire for Jesus. God appreciates the different ways in which we express our love towards Him: Jesus loves the good food we prepare and at the same time, he does not want us to disturb others who sit at his feet to contemplate his face.

Heavenly Father, allow us to pray hard freely. Amen.

增我力量 INCREASE MY STRENGTH


13:36-43

天主不是喜歡以水滴石穿的耐性,以春風化語,有如酵母般不顯眼的力量,去感化世人,召叫人去悔改嗎?為何在末日尚預備了火窰去焚燒那些邪惡的子民呢?而且,這些邪惡的子民還是在天主所建立的天國之內的!

原來人的自由甚至連天主也感到詫異的。人運用自由,把四周的環境改變成為更適合自己生活的地方。人獨居不好,於是團結成群生活。人建立各種制度使自己生活的團體壯大,以增大自己的存活的機會。可惜人心邪惡,所建立的制度一樣邪惡;二者相得益彰,反過來剝削欺凌弱小無辜者;對天主的微風細語,充耳不聞。所以在末日開始時,天主要掃除的,不但止是邪惡的人民,天主還會掃除邪惡的制度。

另一方面,生活在這些險惡制度下的義人,卻在磨練中更能發揮出他們美善的潛質,發光如同太陽。所以,作為基督徒,我們不會祈求天主消滅所有的邪惡,或免除我們受苦的機會;我們只會祈求天父增加我們承受痛苦的能力,並一如保祿宗徒的教訓一樣,以我們的受苦補充耶穌基督為教會的受苦。

天父,求祢增強我們的信德,並以我們的犧牲,與基督一起救贖世界。亞孟。

Matthew 13:36-43

Isn't God very patient? Isn't His MO that of using inconspicuous, still small voices, yeast like actions to move, to call people to repentance? Why does he prepare furnace of fire for the evildoers? Moreover, these evildoers are found within the Kingdom He himself built!


Indeed, even God is surprised by the freedom of men. Men make use of their freedom to modify the environment to make it more suitable for their living. It is not good that man should be alone. So they live in communities. They set up all kinds of institutions to make their communities strong in order to increase their chances of survival. Unfortunately, the hearts of men are evil. The institutions they set up are evil as well. The two boost up each other and turn around to exploit the weak and innocent. They refuse to listen to the still small voices of God. Therefore when the end time begins, God will abolish not just the evildoers but also evil institutions.


On the other hand, righteous people who struggle under these evil institutions will be able to shine forth their potentials, like the sun. Therefore, being Christians, we do not pray for the disappearance of all evils, or our sufferings. Instead, we pray the Father to give up enough strength to bear the sufferings. Following the teaching of St. Paul, we make use of our sufferings to make up the sufferings of Christ for the Church.

Heavenly Father, strengthen our faith and make use of our sufferings to redeem the world with Christ. Amen.

傳福音以謙遜為本 HUMILITY IS THE MO OF EVANGELIZATION

傳福音以謙遜為本 (瑪13:31-35)
從一開始,人類便被野心所蒙蔽,好大喜功,向錯誤的方向追尋永垂不朽的事物。巴貝耳塔如是,花了46年時間去擴建的第二座聖殿如是,歷史上所有龐大的帝國亦不外如是,到頭來還是土崩瓦解,灰飛煙滅。可是,今天仍然有人,有國家重蹈覆轍,並沒有從歷史中汲取教訓。
天主卻在微風細語之中啟示自己給厄里亞;用最普通的約旦河水潔淨了納阿曼的癩病;祂的聖子選擇在最不顯眼的馬槽出生,甚至死後亦要借別人的墳墓來埋葬。天主尊重我們,祂不願意以雷霆萬鈞之勢迫我們相信。天主不用千軍萬馬的天使,祗用最不顯眼的酵母來開發天國。天主就是喜歡這樣做。我們呢?
我們習慣以強凌弱,以眾欺寡;習慣當我們越理虧的時候,我們就越大聲說話,希望以聲浪折服他人;甚至濫用權威,對別人破口大罵。這樣做可以傳福音嗎?可以建立天主的國嗎?這祗會令自己暫時舒服,卻阻擋了天主的旨意。

天父啊!求祢平伏我們好大喜功的心,好能謙遜地履行祢的聖意。亞孟。

Humility is the MO of Evangelization (Matthew 13:31-35)
From the start, men were mesmerized by ambitions and grandeurs. They sought eternity in wrong directions. The Tower of Babel was one such example. So was the 2nd Temple which took 46 years to extend. Great empires throughout history would suffer the same annihilation. Yet today, there are still people and governments which follow the same path and have not learnt from history.
But God revealed himself to Elijah in still small voice, cleansed the leprosy of Naaman with ordinary water in the River Jordan. His Son chose to be born in an inconspicuous manger and even buried in a borrowed tomb. God respects us. He does not want to force us with powerful thunderbolts to believe in Him. God does not deploy angelic hosts but tiny yeast to brew the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the modus operandi of God. What about us?
We use to bully the weak, outnumber the minority, yell even louder when our reasons are weaker, hoping to convince others with our volume. We even abuse authority and halt curses at others. Can we evangelize in this way? Can we build up the Kingdom of God? In this way, we may feel comfortable for a short while, but we block the will of God. Heavenly Father, tame our ambitious hearts so that we may carry out Your will in a humble manner. Amen.

耶穌試探斐理伯 Jesus tempted Philip

常年期第十七主日(乙年)
主題:耶穌試探斐理伯

四部福音從四個不同的角度,描繪出救主的容貎,使我們相信祂,從而得救。福音的作者從耶穌基督的生平,挑選出能幫助他們的教會團體成長的材料,編輯出一本反映到他們的教會團體所面對的困難的「耶穌傳」,幫助教會團體的成員,效法救主的榜樣。所以四部福音的內容是各有特色的,不是劃一的。
有些事蹟祗有某一部福音有記載而其他三部沒有,例如醫治十個痲瘋病人祗有一個回來多謝耶穌,是路加的獨家記載,又或者耶穌在五餅二魚神蹟後步行海面,伯多祿也嘗試步行海面,走到耶穌面前的事蹟,是瑪竇的獨家報導。耶穌在復活後問伯多祿三次愛祂嗎,給他賠補三次背主的過錯,是若望獨有的記載。這些選材在在反映出每個作者編寫福音的目的。
有些事蹟是四部福音都一定有記載的。是哪些事蹟呢?聖誕故事?不是。對,是耶穌的受難復活,這是基督信仰的基礎。整個事蹟的大概輪廓是一致的,而細節就各有特色了。今天所聽的「五餅二魚」神蹟,都可以在四部福音找到,所以這個神蹟好像耶穌的受難復活一樣,是真實的,是重要的。

為甚麼說這神蹟是真實的呢?
科技的進步令很多受過教育的人,認為聖經所記載的神蹟是迷信成份居多。所以部份聖經學者嘗試以科學知識去解釋聖經中的神蹟,想減少人們對基督信仰是迷信的偏見。例如BBC就製作了不少所謂「聖經之謎」的紀錄片,嘗試把聖經所記載的神蹟合理化,科學化。例如出谷紀所記載的十個災難和過紅海,BBC就以公元前一千五百年的地中海的一個島嶼上的火山爆發去解釋。至於耶穌治病的神蹟如瞎子癱子,他們都解釋成為「歇斯底里」精神病,把耶穌解釋成為一個精神病醫生。增餅的神蹟就解釋成為一個小孩子的無私,感動了全場的人也願意拿出自己所帶來的食物,與人分享,結果剩下十二籃碎塊。「五餅二魚」不是神蹟,祗不過是一個感動人心的故事而已。

這種解釋犯了斷章取義的毛病。首先,四部福音祗有若望記載「五餅二魚」的來源。馬爾谷和路加不是十二宗徒,不在場所以沒有記載是可理解的,但連瑪竇宗徒也沒有記載,那就有點兒奇怪了。可能瑪竇寫福音時認為這個細節不重要,沒有記載的必要。但更有可能的解釋是當時他不在附近。瑪竇可能在維持秩序,以免群眾擠擁著耶穌。倘若在場維持秩序的瑪竇也不知道這個小孩的存在,何況其他離耶穌更遠的群眾呢?他們又怎會被一個不存在的小孩所感動呢?

講完「五餅二魚」神蹟的真實性之後,讓我們反省它的重要性。「五餅二魚」的神蹟不單只証明了耶穌基督是天主子,而且這神蹟更是後來建立「聖體聖事」的綵排。
首先,大家應該記得,耶穌受洗後,四十日在曠野守齋祈禱,接受魔鬼的試煉。當耶穌飢餓的時候,撒旦曾引誘耶穌把石頭變餅充飢,來証明祂是天主子。當時耶穌引用申命紀駁斥撒旦,並拒絕濫用天主子的能力。今天,耶穌把少許的五餅二魚變出足以令五千人吃飽而且有剩餘的糧食,不但滿足到世人的需要,更把撒旦教訓一頓,我們不應把天主所賜予的能力隨便濫用,而且更証明了祂的確是「天主子」。
其次,耶穌行這「五餅二魚」神蹟時所做的動作和所唸的祝謝辭,可能和在最後晚餐建立「聖體聖事」時的動作和祝謝辭是一致的。為甚麼有這個推測呢?因為耶穌復活後,用了四十天的時間召集了一百二十個信徒。他們不可能全部有份出席「最後晚餐」,見証耶穌建立聖體聖事。福音的另一處記載,耶穌復活後顯現給門徒時,他們大都認不出耶穌,直至耶穌在他們眼前擘餅,他們纔認出一路和他們同行的竟是復活的主。他們既沒有出席「最後晚餐」,惟一的可能性就是在「五餅二魚」神蹟的現場,而且不是在外圍,而是在看得到耶穌的附近。所以,「五餅二魚」的神蹟與建立「聖體聖事」是互相輝映的;一方面這神蹟可以想像為第一台露天彌撒,另一方面,這神蹟指出聖體聖事的確能滿足所有人的需要。

最後,讓我們來處理一個有關「試探」的議題。為甚麼耶穌要試探斐理伯呢?如果連親近耶穌的十二宗徒也受到耶穌的試探,我們這些門徒又可以怎麼辦呢?我們領聖體豈不是請耶穌來試探我們嗎?
首先,天主是全知的,祂實在不用試探我們已知道我們對祂有多少信德,多少愛慕,正如伯多祿三次答覆耶穌詢問時所說:「主,祢原知道一切。」(21:17
相反,人所知的有限,因而信心有限,並且缺乏安全感。所以聖經反而記載了很多人類試探天主的事蹟。試探天主是因為缺乏信心,並為了增加安全感。天主是不需要增加信心和安全感。

那麼,我們應該如何理解聖經所記載的有關天主試探亞巴郎、試探約伯、耶穌試探斐理伯等故事呢?其實,與其說「試探」不如說是「考驗」。藉著這些考驗,天主讓亞巴郎、約伯和斐理伯更認識自己,加強他們的力量,去克服困難障礙,好能更愛祂。
今次,耶穌給斐理伯一個考驗,他表現如何呢?這事蹟反映到斐理伯是一個十分精算的人,他很快已經計算出要處理目前的局面所需要的資源:二百個德納的糧食。(v. 6:7)即二百個工作天,大概八個月,的工資。但是大家有沒有看到斐理伯其實答非所問,捉錯用神呢?耶穌是問他「從哪裡買餅?」但斐理伯卻說要二百個德納。試想想,就算有錢,也不能隨時有幾萬個餅供應給他們。當時臨急臨忙,除了天主之外,餅從哪裡來?
相對地,安德肋是個行動型,務實地想辦法處理困難的人,可是於事無補,杯水車薪。無論斐理伯如何精算,他仍算漏了天主;無論安德肋如何努力落實去解決問題,他仍要靠天主出力纔可真正解決問題。

各位兄弟姊妹,天主在我們在日常生活中給我們的各種考驗,有來自經濟資源上, 例如失業,供樓等,好像斐理伯一樣;有來自疾病健康的,好像約伯一樣;有來自親情的,好像亞巴郎所遇到的。這些考驗不是要我們表示對天主忠心,大義滅親;又或者患病是受到天主的懲罰;資源缺乏就想辦法賺錢,結果本末倒置,忘記了傳福音的使命。各位,我們有幸可以領聖體,迎接耶穌來臨我們的心中。不要妄想耶穌會幫我們供樓,耶穌會免除我們身患的絕症,或者把我們變成一個人見人愛,面面俱圓的人。讓我們感謝耶穌賜給我們的考驗,讓我們更認識了解自我。祈求耶穌聖化我們,賜我們足夠力量完成試煉。讓我們更能體驗天主對我們的慈愛。

17th Ordinary Sunday (Year B)
Theme: Jesus tempted Philip

The 4 canonical gospels paint the countenance of our Saviour from 4 different perspectives so that we may believe in him and be saved. The Evangelists picked up teachings and events in the life of Jesus Christ, which helped their communities grow, to write up biographies of Jesus which reflect the difficulties the church communities met. They helped church members imitate the examples of the Saviour. Thus, we have 4 gospels with different characteristics and they are not harmonized.

Some incidents were reported by one single gospel only while the other 3 have not. E.g. the healing of 10 lepers where only one of them returned to thank Jesus is reported exclusively by Luke. When Jesus walked on the sea after the 5 loaves 2 fish miracle, only Matthew wrote about Peter’s walking on the waters towards Jesus. After resurrection, Jesus asked Peter 3 times whether he loved him more than the others to forgive his 3 denials. This is found in John alone. These examples show that each Evangelist had different intentions in writing the gospels. Some events are recorded by all 4 gospels. Which ones? Nativity story? No. Which? Yes, the passion and resurrection of Jesus. This is the foundation of Christian faith. The overall outline is the same among the 4 gospels but the details vary. The miracle of 5 loaves and 2 fish is also found in all 4 gospels. Therefore, this miracle, like the passion and resurrection of Jesus, is authentic and important.

Why did I say the miracle is authentic?
The advance in technology makes educated people think that the miracles recorded in the Bible were superstitions. Therefore, some biblical scholars try to explain biblical miracles in scientific terms to lessen people’s prejudice of Christianity being superstitious. For example, BBC has produced many “Mysteries of the Bible” documentaries, trying to make biblical miracles more reasonable and scientific. BBC made use of a volcanic eruption on an island in the Mediterranean Sea in 1500 B.C. to explain away the 10 plagues and the crossing of the Red Sea in Exodus. As for the healing miracles of Jesus, such as the blind and the paralytic, they explained that those were hysteria symptoms. Jesus became a faith healer, a psychiatrist. This miracle of multiplication of loaves is an edifying touching story in which the action of an altruistic boy so moved the whole crowd that people surrendered and shared the food they had brought. Consequently, 12 baskets of leftover were collected. The 5 loaves and 2 fish is not a miracle. It is only an edifying morality story.

This kind of explanation makes the mistake of reading an incident out of context. First of all, only John among the 4 gospels mentions the source of these 5 loaves and 2 fish. Mark and Luke were not the Twelve. It is understandable that they might not be on the spot. But don’t you find it strange that even Matthew does not mention? Perhaps Matthew thought that this piece of detail not worth mentioning. But a more probable explanation would be that Matthew was not in the vicinity. Perhaps he was doing crowd control to prevent people from crushing Jesus. If even Matthew, who was controlling the crowd on the spot, did not know of the existence of the boy, what about those people who were farther away from Jesus? How could they be touched by a boy whom they did not know existing?

Now let us turn to the importance of this miracle. Not only did this miracle prove that Jesus is the Son of God, but it was also a rehearsal of the subsequent institution of the Sacrament of Eucharist.
Firstly, as you all know, after baptism, Jesus stayed in the wilderness for 40 days to fast, pray and to receive temptations from the Devil. When Jesus was hungry, Satan persuaded Jesus to turn stones into bread to prove that he was the Son of God. At that time, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy to refute Satan. The Son of God refused to abuse his power. Today, Jesus made use of a small amount of bread to feed 5000 people with surplus. Not only is Jesus able to provide for our physical needs, but he also rebuts Satan that we should not abuse the powers God bestows on us. Moreover, this multiplication of loaves proves that Jesus is truly the Son of God.

Secondly, the actions and prayer Jesus used to multiply the loaves are very likely the same as those in the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. Why do we have this hypothesis? After resurrection, Jesus spent 40 days to call back 120 believers. It is impossible for all 120 of them to attend the Last Supper to witness the institution of the Eucharist. In another story, when Jesus appeared to the disciples after resurrection, they could not recognize him until he broke the bread before their eyes. Only then could they realize that the resurrected Lord had accompanied them all along the way. Since they had not attended the Last Supper, the only possibility for them to know the gestures was that they were present at the miracle of multiplication of loaves. They were on the spot, not at the perimeter but close enough to be able to see Jesus. Therefore, the multiplication miracle and the institution of the Eucharist are tightly coupled. On one hand, the miracle could be thought of as the first open air mass. On the other hand, this miracle shows that the Eucharist can satisfy the need of all.

Lastly, let us deal with the issue of temptation. Why did Jesus tempt Philip? If Jesus tempted even the Twelve who were close to him, what shall we, ordinary believers, do? When we receive the Holy Communion, are we inviting Jesus to come into us to tempt us?
First of all, God is omniscient. It is truly unnecessary for God to tempt us in order to know how much we believe in Him, we love Him. Like Peter who answered Jesus 3 times, “Lord you know all things. You know that I love you.” (John 21:17)
On the contrary, what man can know is finite, thus our faith is finite and we lack a sense of security. Actually, we find in the Bible more stories of men tempting God than vice versa. We test God because of a lack of faith and to enhance our sense of security. God does not need to increase faith and a sense of security.

Then how shall we understand the temptation stories of Abraham, Job and Philip? Indeed, it would be better to speak of tests rather than temptations. With these tests, God lets Abraham, Job and Philip know themselves better, to empower them to overcome difficulties and obstacles so as to love Him better.
So, how did Philip fare in this test? This incident shows that Philip was apt at calculation. He was able to calculate very quickly how much was needed to deal with the situation: 200 denarii worth of bread (v. 6:7). 200 denarii were the wages of 200 days, about 8 months. But have you noticed that Philip did not answer the question correctly, that he misunderstood the question? Jesus asked him where to buy bread but Philip answered 200 denarii. Just think about it, even if you had the money, you would not have tens of thousands of loaves immediately ready to distribute. At such a short notice, besides God, where can you get the amount of loaves?
In comparison, Andrew was an action man who handled difficult situations in a pragmatic way. Unfortunately, the problem was too huge for him. No matter how well Philip calculated, he left out God in his calculation. No matter how hard Andrew tried to solve a problem, he still needed God to really solve the problem.

Dear brethren, God gives us different kinds of tests in our daily life. Some are financial, like unemployment and mortgage, similar to the one which Philip handled; some are health and sickness like those of Job’s and some are relational like that of Abraham’s. These tests do not demand us to kill our children to prove our loyalty; or to suffer sickness as punishments from God; or in view of the lack of resources, to make more money instead of the mission of evangelization. Brethren, we are blessed to be able to receive the Holy Communion, to invite Jesus to come into our hearts. Do not fantasize that Jesus would come to redeem your flats, to heal you of your incurable diseases or to make you an all-rounding likeable person. Let us rather thank Jesus for giving us these tests, to let us know ourselves better. Pray to Jesus to sanctify us, to give us enough strength to complete these trials. Let us cherish better God’s mercy on us.

享受與耶穌在一起的休息 Enjoy resting with Jesus

主題:享受與耶穌在一起的休息

運用聖經作為默想的材料,是非常好的祈禱。第一步,就是向聖神禱告,祈求聖神光照我們的明悟,和炙熱我們對耶穌和對祂的說話的愛心,使我們渴望與祂親近。第二步,就是略讀經文一次,看看有沒有不明白的文字。我們必須澄清了這些文字的背景,以免解錯了聖經,跟著的默想就會行錯方向了。第三步纔開始慢慢細讀經文幾次,進入祈禱的狀態。大家已聽過執事朗讀過福音一次,現在讓我們了解經文的背景,並澄清一些地理上的問題。

今天的福音,承接上星期耶穌派遣十二宗徒兩個兩個出去宣揚天國的喜訊。今天他們回來向耶穌報告他們傳福音的成果。各位,福音沒有交代十二宗徒傳福音傳了多久,一個星期,抑或一個月?傳福音的地點,是鄉村小鎮抑或是城市呢?凡是經文沒有實實在在寫下的,所有的讀者,包括神學家、小說家、電影導演和普通的教徒,就有非常大的自由度去作出合理的推測和想像。所以,在祈禱默想的時候,我們是可以,甚至應該運用我們的想像力,把自己融入聖經的故事之中。

讀經是要兼顧上文下理,不可斷章取義的。例如,從今天的福音,我們讀到「有很多人從各城徒步前往耶穌與門徒預算去的目的地」,這些人都是十二宗徒傳福音時所吸引到的,他們是來自城市的。即是說十二宗徒曾經到過城市裡去宣揚福音。城市是有城墻圍起來的一幅土地,人口應有好幾百甚至上千。由此推論,十二宗徒離開耶穌,起碼去了一個月或以上,走遍加里肋亞省各城,治病驅魔,宣告天國的福音。按此估計,耶穌派遣他們出去傳福音,約定一個月後到某處與他會合。可想而知,十二宗徒經過個多月的努力,一定是十分疲累的了。雖然疲累,他們卻是興奮的,因為以前他們祗見証耶穌的治病驅魔,今次是他們自己親自治病驅魔,興奮的心情,非筆墨所能形容。另一方面,他們的傳教是成功的,因為耶穌跟著就用了五餅二魚,使五千人吃飽。所以門徒是很有成功感的。

好了,忙碌工作之後,是休息的時候了。耶穌說,「你們來,私下到荒野裡,去休息一會兒!」(6:31)是荒野。在大家的心目中,「荒野」是怎麼樣的地方呢?是「荒山野嶺」嗎?在巴肋斯坦是指寸草不生的沙漠嗎?無論如何,「荒野」一定是沒有城墻的地方,人煙稀疏的地方。
福音說怎樣去「荒野」呢?是乘船往荒野去。「乘船」當然不是指陸上行舟,坐氣墊船喇。讓我們來上一課聖地的地理罷。巴肋斯坦的西邊是地中海,耶穌的家鄉納匝肋在巴肋斯坦的北部加里肋亞省。在北方與今天的黎巴嫩接壤,東方與敘利亞接壤。加里肋亞省有一個湖,稱為「加里肋亞海」,若望福音稱它為「提比利亞海」。這個湖有一個出口,水由出口向南流入一個沒有出口的鹽湖,這個鹽湖就是有名的「死海」了。這條河道就是約旦河,若翰洗者就是沿著這河道宣講悔改的洗禮,為人付洗,準備迎接默西亞。

好了,我們明白了有疑問的經文之後,可以深入反省默想了。
首先,今次傳福音的成就是意料之外的。請大家記著,傳福音的成就不是人的努力,是天主在工作。人太容易被勝利沖昏了頭腦的,以為成功是因為自己有才華,是自己努力的成果,殊不知謀事在人,成事在天。例如,上星期的下午,堂區的關社組聯同教區勞工事務委員會一行二十多人,探訪天水圍區內的清潔工人,送上勞工手襪和自製的蚊膏,對他們表達關懷和尊敬。感謝天主,雖然當日天氣酷熱,但有風和不是烈日當空,這不是天主的庇蔭是甚麼呢?在上星期的講道中,我曾說過我們不需要怕在傳福音時遭人拒絕,因為很多人是渴望領洗入教,祗是缺乏了推薦人,入教無門而已。而且這是天主的工作,是天主與傳教士的合作。今次關社組預備了五十份「天使的禮物」,兵分兩路,到天耀邨和天水圍公園接觸清潔工人。心情是矛盾的,既想關懷他們,卻又擔心妨礙了他們的工作。開始時大家都沒有信心可以派完。結果呢?供不應求,以至部份清潔工人失望地空手而回。這不是天主在工作是甚麼呢?

讓我們再投入福音的場境中默想吧。我們可以想像到,十二宗徒在船上仍七咀八舌,在師父面前眩耀自己如何成功,耶穌的面容是怎樣的呢?離岸開始遠了,岸上的喧鬧聲細弱了,甚至聽不到了,剩下的是同門師兄弟彼此間交換心得。慢慢地,大家開始靜下來,祗剩下搖櫓和湖水的聲音,或者感受到從船尾吹過來的涼風。耶穌的面容是怎樣的呢?耶穌有對您微笑嗎?各位兄弟姊妹,我們停留在這一刻,靜默地享受與耶穌一起休息的幸福罷。

對,在船上祗不過是入靜的準備,我們要完全進入荒野,那裡沒有城墻把我們同天主分開。我們為生活每日營營役役,我們躲在心靈的一角,築起了圍墻來保護自己,這樣我們有安全感,我們感到舒適。可惜,在令自己不受傷害的同時,我們不知不覺變得麻木不仁,看不見身邊的人的需要,甚至連天主也拒諸城墻之外。所以「荒野」並不是地理上的荒野,而是我們內心的另一個角落,是在我們築起的城墻之外。在那裡會找到天主,在天主前就不用再裝聾扮啞,沒有斤斤計較,沒有老謀深算,因為祂知曉一切。你會發現,那裡並非你想像中寸草不生的不毛之地。因為天主可以擊石出水,灌溉沙漠,可以解決你所有的饑渴。

耶穌派遣宗徒成功地進入城內傳福音,吸引城裡的人離開城墻,進入荒野,在那裡天主要使他們飽足。各位兄弟姊妹,每一天都找機會停一停,靜一靜,進入內心的荒野,不單是為了休息,更是為了獲得天主的滋養。最好能養成每日撥最少十五分鐘,默想當日的福音的習慣。能在西鐵車箱內默想福音固然好,不過你未必有這種功力。聖堂是很理想,很接近荒野的寧靜之所,找個適合自己的時間,每日返聖堂默想十五分鐘福音,聆聽耶穌的教訓。

Sixteenth Ordinary Sunday (Year B)
Theme: Enjoy resting with Jesus

Making use of the Bible as meditation materials is a very good way to pray. Firstly, we pray to the Holy Spirit to illuminate our intellect and to enkindle our love of Jesus and his words, to stir up our desire to come close to him. Secondly, we read the text in a cursory way to see whether there is any difficult text. We need to clarify the background of the text lest we misunderstand it and head for a wrong direction in our meditation. Thirdly, we read slowly the text several times to enter into a state of prayer. Now that I have read you the gospel once, we should turn to know about the background and clarify some geographical points.

The passage today is a continuation from the story last week where Jesus sent the Twelve out to preach two by two the good news of the Kingdom of Heaven. Today, the Twelve returned to report their achievements to Jesus. However, the gospel does not mention for how long the Twelve preached, one week or one month. It is also silent as to where the Twelve preached, villages, towns or cities. When the Bible does not put things down clearly, readers, including theologians, novelists, movie directors and ordinary faithful, can enjoy a considerable degree of latitude to make reasonable guesses and imagination. Thus, in our meditation, we can and should make use of our imagination to integrate ourselves into the Bible stories.

We must also not read a piece of text out of context. For example, in today’s text, we read that a large crowd came out of cities to arrive ahead of Jesus’ intended destination. The large crowd was attracted by the Twelve in their preachings. They came from cities. That is to say the Twelve had entered cities to preach the gospel. A city was a piece of land surrounded by walls. Hundreds and even a thousand people lived in a city. From this, we estimate that the Twelve must have spent more than a month to travel around cities of Galilee, healing, exorcizing and preaching the gospel. Jesus sent them out to preach, arranged to rendezvous with them a month later at an appointed place. Needless to say, the Twelve were exhausted after one month’s work. Though exhausted, they were excited because previously they had seen Jesus cure and exorcise, but now they cured and exorcised with their own hands. The thrill was unspeakable. Their evangelization was a great hit because later, Jesus fed 5000 people with five loaves and 2 fish. The Twelve must have been elated with a strong sense of achievement.

After much hard work, it was time for rest. Jesus said, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31) A lonely place. What sort of a place is a lonely place? Wild mountain ranges? Palestinian deserts where not a blade of grass is to be found? No matter what, there would not be any city walls in a lonely place, a sparsely populated place. How did they get to the lonely place? In a boat! Of course the gospel does not mean travelling to the lonely place on a hovercraft. Now, let’s take a crash course on the geography of the Holy Land. Nazareth, the home town of Jesus was in Galilee, a province in the north. Today, on its northern border is Lebanon and its east Syria. There is a lake in the province of Galilee. It is called the “Sea of Galilee”. In the gospel of John, it is also called the “Sea of Tiberias”. There is an outlet on the southern tip which flows into a salty lake in the south. This salty lake is the famous “Dead Sea” and the river that flows into the Dead Sea is River Jordan. John the Baptist had once preached the baptism of repentance along the river, baptized the people to prepare them for the coming of the Messiah.

Now that we have clarified the text, let us do an in-depth reflection now.
First of all, the success in preaching was unexpected. Please remember, achievements in evangelization are not the work of men but the work of God. Men can easily be intoxicated by ‘their’ successes, thinking that the successes are due to their talents, their efforts. It did not occur to them that it was all God’s work. For example, last Sunday afternoon, some twenty plus people from the Social Concern Group of the parish together with the Diocesan Labour Affair Commission visited some outsourced janitors in the Tin Shui Wai community. We gave them worker gloves and home-made mosquitoe repellant cream to show our concern and respect. Thank God, it was hot but there were breezes and the sun hid behind the clouds. What was this if not God’s shelter? In my homily last week, I mentioned that we should not fear being rejected in our evangelization because many people wished to be baptized. It was only that they did not have any sponsor and did not know how. This is God’s work, a cooperation between God and the missionaries. This time, the Social Concern Group had prepared 50 “Angel’s Gifts” and divided into two teams, one went to the Tin Shui Wai Park and the other to Tin Yiu Estate. Our mind was contradictory. On one hand we cared, but on the other we worried disrupting their work. At the beginning, we did not have enough confidence to distribute all 50 gifts. In the end, we could not meet the demand. Many janitors went away disappointingly empty handed. What was this if not God’s work?

Let us go deeper into the gospel scene to meditate. We can envision that the Twelve were bickering, showing off their achievements in front of the Master on the boat. What do you see on the countenance of Jesus? The boat is leaving the shore. The noises on the shore grow weaker and even disappear. What remains is the experience sharing among the disciples. Slowly, they begin to quiet down. We can only hear the sounds of the oars and waves. We can feel the caresses of the breeze from behind. What do you see on the countenance of Jesus? Does he smile at you? Brethren, let us stop here for a little while, quietly enjoy the bliss of resting with Jesus.

Right, the journey on the boat is only a preparation. We need to enter the lonely place completely where there are no walls to cut you off from God. We are leading a hectic life for our livelihood. We hide in a corner of our heart, build up fences and walls to protect ourselves. In this way, we feel safe. We feel comfortable. However, while we make ourselves safe from injuries, imperceptibly, we harden our hearts. We do not see the needs of our neighbour. We even lock God out of our walls. So, the “lonely place” is not a geographical location but a corner in our hearts, outside the walls we have built. There you will encounter your God. Before God, you do not need to put on masks, to bargain or to calculate because He knows everything. You will discover that the lonely place is not, as you imagine, so infertile that not a blade of grass can grow. It is because God could strike the rock to give water to irrigate the desert, to quench your thirst.

Jesus sent his Apostles to enter into the cities successfully to preach the gospel, to draw the people out of the walls into the wilderness. There God feeds them all to their satisfaction. Brethren, look for an opportunity to stop working for a while, to observe silence for a while every day. Enter into the wilderness of your heart not just for a rest but to be nourished by God. My advice is to build up a habit of meditating the gospel reading of the day for at least 15 minutes a day. It is good of you if you can do your meditation in the coach on which you travel to work but it would be extremely demanding. The Church is an ideal choice, very much similar to the tranquility of the wilderness. Look for a time slot suitable for you. Come back to Church to meditate the gospel for 15 minutes, to listen to the messages of Jesus.

我們每個人都是傳教士 We are all missionaries

主題:我們每個人都是傳教士

在彌撒結束的時候,我們聽慣了神父或執事宣報:「彌撒禮成。」,然後大家答「感謝天主。」可惜,這個中文官方翻譯並不理想,譯漏了一個字。拉丁文原文是Ite, missa est. 「彌撒禮成」祗譯了Missa est並沒有譯出Ite. Ite有「去、前去」的意思。後來,有神父執事加了「請大家平安回去,彌撒禮成。」將Ite變成「回去」,結果就變成教友在彌撒後到茶樓霸位飲茶食午飯,失去了Ite原文的精神。好吧,既然講到食飯,我們就由食飯繼續講下去吧。
科技的發達令我們的生活起了不少的變化。從前,吃飯之前就是唸飯前經,感謝天主。今天呢?人未食,手機先食。食物擺在桌上,起筷之前,大家總拿起手機,拍攝食物的賣相,上載到社交網站,等待其他人去like。吃飯不單是為了果腹,更是為了慶祝,為了聯誼,而且不再限於與同檯吃飯的人聯誼,更是為了與分佈在天涯海角的人聯誼,把好的東西,好的訊息,與人分享。同樣,當妳在某茶餐廳喝過一杯回味無窮的咖啡,或看完一齣好的電影或者知道某商店做特價等等,妳會第一時間通知妳的好朋友。這就是那麼理所當然的人性的流露。既然「與人分享」是理所當然的人情,讓我們回頭看看Ite missa est的精神是甚麼吧。

Missa有使命、任務的意義,即是英文的mission。這樣理解的話,Ite的「去、前去」便有了差遣、派遣的意思,而不是回去的意思了。所以,「彌撒禮成」祗是儀式的結束,而不是使命的結束。神父執事代表著耶穌基督差遣大家去、前去、出去,在平日的生活中,去完成使命。是甚麼使命呢?作為耶穌的門徒,我們有傳福音的任務。這就是上個星期吳神父在講道中提及到的先知使命。這是領洗入教時所獲得的,分享耶穌的三重職務之一。祗要妳是基督徒,妳便有這個先知使命。

一聽到傳福音,傳教,我們第一個反應必然是,我才疏學淺,沒有讀過神學,我不行的,由神父、執事、修士修女做就夠了,我祗能做到的,就是捐錢,就是為聖召祈禱。捐錢固然要,為聖召祈禱固然要,但實際參予傳福音更為重要。其實,大家怕傳福音、 怕傳教,最主要的原因是怕被人拒絕。其實,大家不需要怕,因為有很多人希望成為基督徒,可惜不知道如何入門而已。何解?
所謂人同此心,心同此理。當你見到人家的孩子有禮貌,談吐得體,對答如流,你總會打聽他在哪所中學就讀;當你見到別人容光煥發,你會問她健康美容之道,用哪些化裝品,吃甚麼減肥餐,去哪裡做瑜珈等。同樣的道理,很多人見到天主教學校教導出來的學生,看到天主教在香港所做的愛德服務,為爭取社會公義所做的見証,他們是羨慕的,渴望加入這一群志同道合的人。他們祗欠一個介紹人。你是否這個介紹人呢?你可以做這介紹人嗎?

如果我們會推介回味無窮的咖啡、好看的電影、商場的特價,或者用手機映下食物的賣相,因為這些都是好的東西,好的資訊的話,我們是否更應該推介天主教的信仰呢?倘若你不覺得這份信仰是好的,你來參加彌撒,你唸經祈禱,讀經默想等豈不是在浪費時間?大家一定覺得這裡有歸屬感,有家的感覺,可以在這裡成長發展,可以升天堂你纔會來。但你自己享受家的感覺,而不理會仍在外面有家歸不得的兄弟姊妹,你於心何忍呢?

在今個主日的福音,我們看到耶穌派遣十二宗徒傳福音的故事,認識到傳福音應注意的地方。二千年前要帶一根棍杖,不要穿兩件內衣(6:8-9),今天還要帶一根棍杖傳福音嗎?二千年前不要帶食物,不要帶錢,倚賴好心人的施捨,信賴天主的照顧,今天行得通嗎?沒有錢,可以拍攝視像,上傳Youtube,甚至自己製作宗教電影電視節目、設立一個社會傳播處,開一所天主教電視台去福傳嗎?可見,瞭解經文的精神,比跟隨字面的意思更重要。那麼,傳福音的方法和精神是甚麼呢?讓我們再看一次。

耶穌要十二人兩個兩個去傳福音(6:7),這是基督宗教的特質。大家有見過和尚兩個兩個一齊化緣嗎?無。因為佛教比較個人化。一個和尚可以找個有靈氣的地方,閉關二十年就可以頓悟,達到涅槃境界。基督宗教不可以。耶穌吩咐門徒要彼此相愛。一個人又怎樣可以彼此相愛呢?佛教的高僧是個法力高強的一個人。基督徒是罪人,每一個都是有缺陷的罪人。他們要在教會之中成聖,在團體之中得救。所以傳福音不能單打獨鬥,而要彼此扶持。
耶穌為甚麼要我們兩個兩個而不是三個或四個一組呢?四個人一組,除非你們打麻雀,否則很難持久,很快就會分裂成兩個二人組合,分道揚鑣。雖然說三人行必有我師。但三個人很容易會變成兩個聯手排擠孤立第三個。祗有兩個人,祗有你和我,無論如何難相處,你我也要彼此放下身段,接納對方,共同成長,一齊合作完成使命。一個人無論如何能幹和有本領,總不及兩個人聯手的效益大。你可能有以一敵百的本領,但一個人是很難進步,而兩個人在彼此相愛,互諒互助的互動過程中,就可彼此共同長進。這就是耶穌的智慧。

各位兄弟姊妹,耶穌並不因為我們能幹纔揀選我們做先知。亞毛斯先知也祗不過是一個好像伯多祿一樣未有受過高深教育的牧羊人,天主一樣可以使他成為一個有貢獻的先知,留芳百世。讓我們放心大膽,與堂區內的其他兄弟姊妹合作,出去天水圍社區,告訴區內的居民天主的大愛,帶領他們分享天主的永恆生命。

Fifteenth Ordinary Sunday (Year B)
Theme: We are all missionaries

When the mass ends, we use to hear the priest or deacon proclaim, “The Mass is ended” and we answer “Thanks be to God.” Unfortunately, the official Chinese translation has left out one word. The Latin original is “Ite, missa est.” “The Mass is ended” translates the “missa est” only. It does not translate the “ite”. “Ite” means “go, go forth.” Later, some priests and deacons add “Return peacefully. The Mass is ended”. “Ite” becomes “return”. Consequently, the parishioners go to restaurants to reserve tables for lunch after mass. The spirit of “ite” is lost. Since we have touched on the topic of going out for lunch, let’s continue to talk about eating lunch.

With the advancement of technology, our ways of life have undergone big changes. We used to say grace before meals. Today, before we eat, we take out our mobile phone to take photographs of the food, upload them to the social media, anticipating “like’s” from all over the world. Having meals is more than filling up our bellies. It is more a celebration, a socializing. We do not just socialize with people who are sharing the same table with us at this moment, but we also socialize with people all over the world! We share with others good stuff good information and what we cherish. Similarly, when we have enjoyed a lingering cup of coffee in a cafe, or have just watched a good movie or even known of promotion sales in some shopping malls, we would inform our friends in no time. Such is the natural expression of our human nature. Since sharing good things with the others is such a natural inclination, let us see what light it sheds on the spirit of “Ite, missa est”.

Missa means “mission”. From this meaning, “Ite” carries a sense of going forth, being sent or commissioned and not “return”. “The mass is ended” is only the end of the rites and not the end of the mission. The clergy represents Jesus Christ to send the congregation forth to complete the mission in their daily life. What is the mission? Being the disciples of Jesus, we have an evangelization mission. This is the mission of prophets mentioned in the homily of Fr. Joseph Ng last week. We acquired this mission when we were baptized to partake in the threefold ministry of Jesus. If you are a Christian, you have this prophetic mission.

Hearing the word “evangelization”, your immediate reaction would most likely be “I do not know how to do it since I have not studied theology. It would be sufficient for the clergy, nuns and seminarians to carry this out. I can only donate money or pray for vocation.” Donation is necessary. Praying for vocation is necessary but participation in evangelization is even more important. Actually, the main reason why we are afraid to evangelize and to preach is that we are afraid to be rejected. In fact, we don’t need to be afraid because many people wish to become Christians. It is a pity that they do not know how. Why?

Human beings have similar psychology. When you see that the kids of your neighbour are polite, well-versed and able to speak fluently, you might want to know in which secondary schools they study. When you see the radiant face of a certain lady, you might want to ask her some beauty tips, what cosmetics she uses, what diet she is on or where she does yoga. Similarly, many people see the good quality of students studying in Catholic schools, the charities done by the Catholic Church in Hong Kong and the witness they bear in the fighting for social justice. They admire and long to join these like-minded people. What they need is a sponsor. Are you this sponsor? Can you be this sponsor?

If we recommend coffee of lasting aroma, entertaining movies, and cut-throat shopping bargains or sharing pictures of yummy food on the Internet because these are good things, good information, shouldn’t we recommend our Catholic faith too? If you think your faith is not good enough, wouldn’t it be a waste of time to join mass, to say prayers and to meditate the scripture? When you come here, you must have a sense of belonging, a home feeling and a feeling that you may develop your potential; and think you can attain heaven. But while you are enjoying these home feelings, how can you not care about those brothers and sisters who are still wandering to find a home?

In the gospel reading today, we read of how Jesus sent out the Twelve, what instructions they should follow. Two thousand years ago, they took nothing for their journey except a staff and did not put on two tunics. (Mark 6:8-9) Today, do we take a staff when we evangelize? Two thousand years ago, they took no bread, no money and lived on the alms from folks of good will and relied on God’s providence. Does it work today? Without money, can we shoot videos, upload to Youtube and even produce religious movies and TV series, set up a Social Communication Office or a Catholic TV station to evangelize? It is obvious that understanding the spirit of the text is more important than following the letters. So, what are the way and the spirit of evangelization? Let us read the passage once more.

Jesus sent the Twelve out two by two (Mark 6:7). This is a Christian characteristic. Have you ever seen 2 Buddhist monks begging alms together? None. It is because Buddhism is more individualistic. Settled in a cave permeated with a spiritual ether, a monk can attain enlightenment and nirvana after meditating for 20 years or more. This is impossible for Christianity. Jesus taught his disciples to love one another. How can one single man love one another? A ‘high monk’ is a powerful individual. Christians are sinners. Each one of them is a flawed sinner. They have to be sanctified in the Church, redeemed in a community. Therefore, evangelization cannot be done alone. It needs mutual support.

Why did Jesus not group them two by two and not by three or by four? Groups of four cannot last long unless you play mahjong together. Very soon, it will break up into 2 groups of two. Though there must a teacher among a threesome, very easily two of them would gang together to isolate and ostracize the third. In a duo, there are only you and me. No matter how difficult it is for us to live together, we need to put down our ego, accept our partner, grow together and cooperate together to accomplish the mission. No matter how efficient and smart a person is, it achieves less utility than a pair working together. Your ability might surpass those of 100 people putting together, but it is difficult for a single person to make progress. When two people interact together in mutual love and understanding, both of them can grow together. This is the wisdom of Jesus.

Brothers and sisters, Jesus choose us to be prophets not because of our capabilities. Amos, like Simon Peter, was uneducated. God could make him an established prophet known to all future generations. Let us be bold, work hand in hand with other parishioners. Go forth into the Tin Shui Wai community. Tell the people the great love of God. Bring them to share the eternal life of our God.

是甚麼使耶穌感到詫異? What amazed Jesus?

主題:是甚麼使耶穌感到詫異?

今天讓我們來處理一些經文與信理之間的矛盾問題。 當總領天使加俾額爾向童貞瑪利亞傳達天主的旨意,邀請瑪利亞做救世主的母親的時候,瑪利亞曾表達過她希望以童貞的身份,服事天主(1:34)。最後,她並沒有堅持自己的願望,並且願意放棄了做童貞女的念頭而跟隨天主的旨意,按照天使的說話在她身上成就(1:38)。於是瑪利亞成為了耶穌基督的母親。
但天主怎會讓瑪利亞的善意落空呢?既做母親,又做童貞女為世人是不可能的。但正如天使所說,在天主前是沒有不可能的事(1:37)。所以,天主令瑪利亞兩全其美,既做救世主的母親,並永遠保存她的童貞,她的完美。所以在天主的所有受造物之中,童貞聖母瑪利亞是最完美的了,是堪受讚美的。
天主教從一開始就相信聖母瑪利亞是卒世童貞,即懷孕耶穌之前,在生產耶穌的過程中與及生產耶穌之後,天主一直保守著她的童貞。教會相信聖母瑪利亞祗生了耶穌基督一個兒子,這是天主的旨意;她再沒有生其他子女了,這是她做童貞女的意願。但有人就引用今天的福音,想否定聖母祗生了耶穌一個兒子的事實。這樣便推翻了聖母卒世童貞的道理。再引申的話,便會質疑耶穌基督是聖神降孕,亦即質疑耶穌基督的天主性。本堂的主保聖葉理諾與其他的教父例如聖奧思定都有份捍衛聖母卒世童貞的信念。早在公元382年,聖葉理諾就回答了經文中的人物,不是耶穌的親兄弟姊妹妹,而是堂兄弟姊姐,甚至是表兄弟姊妹。請大家注意,聖母瑪利亞和耶穌基督不祗是血脈相連這麼簡單,在神學上,捍衛有關聖母的道理的時候,同時都是捍衛耶穌基督是真人真天主的道理。基督徒之所以是基督徒,不祗是相信有一個天主,而且是相信耶穌基督是真人真天主。

在兩個星期前的福音中,我們聽過耶穌平息風浪的神蹟;在上星期的福音中,又聽過祂復活會堂長雅依洛的女兒的故事。這些神蹟,表達出耶穌基督是天主,是大自然的主宰,又是生命的主宰。耶穌既是天主,祂當然是全知的,祂不但知道古往今來的一切,連每個人心中的思慮,理論上祂也是一清二楚的,例如在治好癱子的故事中,當在場的人心中忖度為何耶穌膽敢褻瀆天主,以人的身份赦罪時,福音說,耶穌憑祂的神力,認透他們的心思(2:8)。那麼,為甚麼今次在納匝肋,耶穌對同鄉的無信,會感到詫異呢?「詫異」一詞在馬爾谷福音中一共出現過六次,全部都有「意料之外」的意思。耶穌為甚麼對同鄉的無信,會感到意外呢?我相信耶穌是有意不運用祂的神力去認透同鄉的心,保留一份驚喜。

今天的第一篇讀經提供了一些線索。讀經取自厄則克耳先知書。厄則克耳原本是聖殿的一個祭司,在猶大亡國時充軍巴比倫,不能做祭司,失業了。但天主召叫他,照顧他,為他安排一個更好的出路,他轉行做了先知。天主賜他神視的能力,看見很多的異像。例如聖堂的大閘上的四個活物。在今天的讀經中,我們可以體會到天主對猶太人,不離不棄的大愛。雖然猶太人一而再,再而三的破壞盟約,壞事做盡,但出於對人類的大愛,天主仍信守盟約,無論他們聽或不聽,天主依然派遣先知,作為天主臨在的標記。即是說,天主對冥頑不靈的人,始終不離不棄。天主對人是有要求的,但當人未能做到天主的要求時,天主不會怪責,甚至放棄他們。天主仍不斷給人類改過自身的機會,直到有朝一日,人類懂得回頭為止。

反觀耶穌的同鄉,自小看著耶穌成長,對他的身世,瞭如指掌,對於耶穌,他們已有一個既定的見解,有一個偏見。他們一方面承認耶穌的大能,但另一方面,又鄙視他的身份地位,對耶穌起了反感,拒絕耶穌帶來的福音,天主的慈愛。一如天主藉厄則克耳先知所說,無論人類聽抑或不聽,接受或拒絕天主,天主依然以耶穌作為先知,標誌著對人類不離不棄的愛。結果呢?
耶穌感到詫異。耶穌以為他們是亞巴郎子孫,本來有獲得救贖的優先權,結果他們放棄了這優勢。耶穌以為行神蹟沒有甚麼困難,結果納匝肋人的無信令祂英雄無用武之地。

耶穌本來能夠預先知道一切,知道有自稱基督徒的人對童貞聖母瑪利亞不敬,但祂在十字架上時,仍把瑪利亞交給信徒作他們的母親;知道有奉基督宗教為國教的國家承認同性婚姻,而且其他國家會跟風,但祂在為男人造一個相稱的助手時,仍給他造了一個女性,建立婚姻制度。
當然,天主寧願冒險,寧願感受到詫異,也不願剝奪人類的自由。縱使人濫用了自由不斷地闖禍,天主仍不離不棄。當然受到損失的是那些硬心腸的我們。
我們不是耶穌,沒有天主全知的能力。但在待人接物方面,最少我們也可以對不斷令我們失望的人,懷有希望,懷有愛。縱使他們會自食其果,天主對他們的慈愛是永遠長存的。

Theme: What amazed Jesus?
Today, let us handle some contradictions between the scripture and articles of faith.

When Archangel Gabriel conveyed God’s message to the Blessed Virgin Mary, inviting her to be the mother of the Saviour, Mary had expressed her wish to serve God as a virgin (Luke 1:34). At last, she did not insist but gave up her ambition to follow God’s will. Let it be done to her according to the word of the angel (1:38). Thus Mary became the mother of Jesus Christ.
But how would God allow Mary’s good will to fall to the ground? In man, it is impossible to be a virgin and at the same time a mother. But just as what the angel said, with God nothing would be impossible (1:37). So, God made Mary enjoy the best of both worlds, to be the mother of the Saviour and at the same time to preserve her virginity, her perfection forever. Therefore, among all the creatures of God, the Blessed Virgin Mary is the most perfect, the most blessed.

Since early time, the Catholic Church has always held the perpetual virginity of Mary, i.e. before pregnancy, during delivery and after giving birth to Jesus, God guarded her virginity. The Church believes that Mary has given birth to Jesus, her only child. It is the will of God that she does not give birth to any other children. This is also Mary’s wish to remain a virgin. However, some people want to make use of the gospel reading today to deny the fact that Mary had given birth to only one son, Jesus. This would refute the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of the BVM. Extrapolate from this, people can query the incarnation of Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit, and thus the divinity of Christ. The patron saint of our parish, St. Jerome and other Church Fathers such as St. Augustine had actively defended this doctrine of the perpetual virginity of the BVM. As early as 382 A.D., St. Jerome answered that the brothers and sisters mentioned in the text were cousins. Please take note that Our Lady’s link with Jesus Christ is more than a maternal-filial bond. Theologically, in defending Marian doctrines, we are at the time defending the divinity and humanity of Jesus. What makes Christians Christians is not just their belief in the oneness of God, but the dual natures of Jesus Christ.

Two weeks ago, we heard of the miracle of the calming of a storm. Last Sunday, we heard of the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue. These miracles show the divinity of Jesus Christ who is the Lord of the cosmos and the Lord of life. Since Jesus is God, he should be omniscient. Not only does he know everything in the past, of the present and all that will happen in the future, but he also knows clearly what is passing through the mind of everybody. For example, in the story of the healing of the paralytic, when people were questioning in their hearts how dared Jesus to blaspheme by forgiving sins as a man, the gospel says that perceiving in his spirit, Jesus was able to read their minds (Mark 2:8). So, why was Jesus amazed because of the unbelief of his fellow countrymen? The word “amazed” appears six times in the gospel, all meaning “unexpected”. Why did Jesus not anticipate the unbelief of the people of Nazareth? I think Jesus did not make use of his power to read the minds of his fellow countrymen. He would like to reserve a surprise for himself.

Today, the first reading which is taken from the book of Ezekiel may provide us with some clues. Ezekiel had been a priest serving the Temple. When Judah was conquered by Babylon, he was exiled and lost his job as a priest. But God called him and took care of him to take up a new career as a prophet. God gave him visionary powers. For example, the Four Living Things, which you can see on our main gate, were his. From the reading today, we may appreciate God’s great love for the Jews. The Jews repeatedly breached the Covenant and had done a lot of abominations. But out of love, God remained faithful to the Covenant. It didn’t matter whether the Jews listened or not, God still sent prophets as a sign of His presence among them. That is to say, God would never give up even the most stubborn people. Of course God has expectations on men, but when men fail to meet God’s expectations, God does not blame them or abandon them. Unceasingly, God gives us chances to repent until one day, we know we should return.

Take a look at Jesus’ fellow countrymen. They had known Jesus since his birth. They knew him like the back of their hands. They had an unchangeable perception, a prejudice of him. On one hand, they acknowledged his powers, but on the other, they despised his status and took offence at him, rejecting the gospel, God’s mercy brought by Jesus. Whether they listened or not, whether they accepted or rejected, God still sent Jesus as a prophet to signify his unfailing love, just as it was proclaimed by Ezekiel. Then what happened? Jesus was amazed. He thought that they were the children of Abraham. Therefore they would take the advantage of this priority to receive redemption. However, they forsook this privilege. Jesus thought it easy to work miracles but the unbelief of the people of Nazareth made him unable to exercise his authority.

Jesus should have known everything beforehand, knowing in advance some self-styled Christians would not respect the BVM. But on the cross, he still made Mary the mother of all believers. He should have known that some Christian countries would legalize same-sex marriage and other countries would follow, but when he made man a helper fit for him, God made a woman to set up the institution of marriage.
Of course, God prefers taking risk, feeling amazed to stripping men of his liberty. Even though men wreak havoc with their freedom, God will never abandon. Of course, the stubborn ones will eventually suffer.
We are not Jesus. We do not possess omniscience. But at least, we should remain forever hopeful and merciful to those who keep disappointing us because even though they would eat the cake they bake, God’s mercy towards them remains forever.
